Common Courts is situated in Parco del Celio. The proposed museum complex aims to exemplify the historical context and its surrounding counterparts. In the company of notable landmarks such as the Palatine Hill and the Colosseum, Common Courts presents itself as an additional platform for inviting visitors of the park to explore.
The orientation of the complex pays homage to the largest monument by the site – the Colosseum. Along with the main entrance located off Via San Gregorio, all entries lead to the main plaza. Off the public spaces are 4 building entrances – all mediated by a different program, with the intention to bring the visitor immediately to a different floor. Exhibition programs are held on sub levels, relating the physical depth of the cities of Rome to the depth of the complex. This effect is manifested in the slit windows and top-lit spaces. The axes are paired with double storey light wells, which visually bridge the sub levels.
All circulation routes, such as the light wells, are narrow and restrict views, where as places of rest and display are expansive. Having no singular circulation route, the circuitous nature of the complex is reminiscent of a natural landscape. Our building has a large visual presence onthe Caelian Hill but does not disrupt the nuance of pedestrian rhythm. In doing so, the structure serves as a disciplined medium to display artifacts of the past, present, and future.
